| The Ministry of Finance has notified the implementation of the Bankers’ Books Evidence Act, 2026. The new law replaces the 1891 legislation governing the use of banking records as evidence.

- The Act received Presidential assent on 13 August 2026.
- It will come into force from 1 October 2026.
- The law provides a modern framework for using banking records as evidence.
- It recognises physical as well as electronic, digital, virtual and cloud-based banking records.
- It also covers backup and disaster-recovery records.
- The Act clarifies when courts can summon bank officials.
- If a bank is not a party to a case, the court will have to record a special cause for summoning its officials.
- The law brings the evidence framework in line with modern banking technology.
